FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

On Thursday 4th August there will be Rosary as usual after the 10.00 am Mass, but no Adoration.

ANNUAL DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGE TO LOURDES

Please pray for everyone on the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes.

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD/TODDLERS’ PRAYERS

We are still in urgent need of new helpers/leaders for these two groups. At the moment we are only able to offer Children’s Liturgy and Toddlers’ Prayers at the 9.00 am Sunday Mass. Pre-Covid we had groups at the 10.30 am Mass as well and we would like to reinstate them.

If you would like to find out more about what is involved – without any obligation – then please get in touch with Mary in the parish office or speak to one of those already on the rotas when you see them at Mass. Ideally we will have rotas for both Masses soon, so that more of our younger children can hear the Word of God in a way that is meaningful to them.

Don’t be frightened! We have many resources to help.

MONDAY ADORATION

During August extended Adoration will finish at 12 noon. There will be no extended Adoration on August 29th as it is a Bank Holiday.

FIRST RECONCILIATION AND HOLY COMMUNION 2023

If you have a child (or children) who you believe may be ready to prepare to celebrate their First Reconciliation and Holy Communion next year, 2023, then please make a note of the date Monday 12th September in your diary now. There will be an essential meeting that evening – either live or via Zoom, depending on circumstances – at which we will explain to parents in detail how the course will be run. Children must be in Year 3 or above at school.

Before you can register your child for preparation for Reconciliation and Holy Communion you will have to join a short preparation course for Parents. Registration for children will only take place after you have completed the Parents’ Course.

Registration for the Parents’ Course does not have to be completed until 19th September, but if you want to register now you can click on the link for the form and return it to the Parish Office, either electronically or a hard copy.

WOKING FOOD BANK COLLECTION

There will be a collection for Woking Food Bank on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th August. The food bank are in particular need of men’s razors, honey, toilet paper, crisps, long-life sponge puddings, chocolate, long-life juices, shower gel, small jars of coffee, tinned fruit, pasta sauce, toothpaste, tinned carrots, tinned peas, instant mashed potato, tinned mixed vegetables, marmite, canned chicken, tomato ketchup, nappies size 6&7, cleaning spray and laundry detergent. Thank you for your continuing generosity.

READINGS FOR SUNDAY 31st JULY

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Ecclesiastes 1: 2, 2:21-23. The great philosopher, the author of Ecclesiastes, reflects on the pointless nature of much of human striving and anxiety, which often derives from human restlessness and pride.

Psalm 89: 3-6, 12-14, 17. O Lord, you have been our refuge from one generation to the next.

Colossians 3: 1-5, 9-11. Paul asserts that the true disciple is faced with important choices between a life built on faith in Christ and the values of heaven and a life driven by the worst impulses of human nature. The new self must make constant progress.

Luke 12: 13-21. The impermanent reality of life, the suddenness with which it can end, is highlighted by Jesus in the story of the rich man and his plans for the future. Material things should always take second place to the priorities for living established by God.

READINGS FOR SUNDAY 7th AUGUST

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Wisdom 18:6-9. The editors of the lectionary make the tasks of reader and homilist difficult here! The author references the night of the exodus from Egypt as a time when the Lord’s actions fulfilled the expectation of his people: that he would act to save them from their enemies. This is why they can now sing the ancient songs of praise. For us today, God’s actions in the past mean that we can trust his promise of salvation.

Psalm 32: 1, 12, 18-20, 22. Happy are the people the Lord has chosen as his own.

Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19. The reader should not be afraid of the longer version. A beautiful reflection on how Abraham, and also Sarah, lived by faith, trusting in the promises made to them, even when it seemed that the only means by which the promises could be fulfilled (Isaac) was being taken from them. Those who make the journey of life by faith have their eyes fixed on the heavenly homeland.

Luke 12:32-48. Again, the celebrant need not be afraid of the longer version! The shorter version presents the images of people who persevere through the night: servants waiting for their master to return and a householder who protects his house against the burglar, together with the admonition, ‘You too must stand ready’. The longer version, however, opens up broader horizons thanks to Peter’s question: is this a parable for us or for everyone? In response, Jesus expands his teaching to suggest what it actually means to be ready: knowledge and action! The good servant knows his master’s wishes and acts on them promptly. For those who know the master’s wishes, there are no excuses.

A support group offering a safe place and support, without prejudice, to people who are going through divorce, are separated or divorced. This is a self-help group run by others who have experienced this loss and change in their lives and are on a recovery journey. We will meet monthly at St John the Evangelist, 3 Springfield Road, Horsham, West Sussex RH12 2PJ. The theme for the meeting will be Communication Skills.
