A REFLECTION FROM FATHER BILL
This past Lent Cardinal Sean sent a copy of his book, Wanted: Friends and Footwashers, to all the priests of our Archdiocese. The book contains a series of reflections on the priesthood, including a chapter on Preaching, in which he writes about the importance of the Bible, and refers to St. Jerome’s belief that ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ.
Sadly, for many of us older (pre Vatican II) Catholics we were never invited to read the Bible. Instead we learned about our faith from the Catholic Catechism. If we had a Bible in our home, it was often an oversize edition that sat on our living room coffee table. As a student at Holy Cross College I took a course on the life of Christ, but we were not required to read the four gospels. That’s just the way it was in those days. How sad!
Today I encourage you to read the Bible, especially the four gospels. I also encourage you to reflect on the Sunday gospels that tell us so much about who Jesus is and what he wants. Recently we heard/read the parable of the good Samaritan. Jesus wants us to serve others, including those in most need (even complete strangers, like immigrants and refugees). The following Sunday we heard/read the story of Jesus visiting the home of Martha and Mary. Sitting with and listening to Jesus (perhaps in a quiet place at home) is an important aspect of growing in our relationship with the Lord. And the next week we heard/read Jesus’ teaching on how we should pray and what we should pray for (He seems to be telling us to pray for a deeper indwelling of the Holy Spirit, as the Spirit moved in him).
Do you want to know Jesus and be closer to Jesus? Read the scriptures. Reflect on the scriptures. Discuss the scriptures with your family and with fellow Catholics. Some Catholics talk about the scriptures and the homily right after Mass. Others participate in a formal or informal bible study. Still others read and reflect on a passage of scripture as an integral part of their daily prayer. Remember: TO KNOW THE BIBLE IS TO KNOW CHRIST.
