A Message from Carolyn McKinnis
Director of Religious Education
This Monday, Aug. 8, is the Feast of St. Dominic. In addition to founding the Dominican Order, the Order of Preachers, he was also a well-educated man, humble, and committed to spreading the Gospel and converting heretics. He sold most of his belongings to care for the hungry and homeless and traveled great distances, often barefoot. He is the patron saint of astronomy, astronomers, falsely accused people, the Dominican Republic, Santo Domino Pueblo, and Valletta, to name a few.
These special traits and characteristics about St. Dominic give us some creative ideas to celebrate his feast day! Get together with your family or friends and consider:
- Praying the Rosary and attending daily Mass. (Our Lady gave St. Dominic the Rosary.)
- Donating a meal or extra groceries to the ACE food pantry.
- Going to a state park and hiking the trails. Shades State Park is roughly a 45-minute drive southwest of the Lafayette area. There are several trails to choose from, plus Sugar Creek runs through the park (walk along the creek barefoot!).
- Staying up extra late or getting up early before the sunrise for stargazing. The Perseid Meteor Showers start in July and run through August, peaking in the next few days. (Shades State Park will host a Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing Party on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 10:00 p.m.)
- Praying with/reflecting on his life and what St. Dominic is teaching us about following Christ.
- St Dominic said, “Whoever governs the passions is master of the world. We must either rule them or be ruled by them. It is better to be the hammer than the anvil.” This is similar to the message of St. Luke’s Gospel. Society and our culture tell us to pursue earthly treasures and that the more earthly treasure we gather, the happier and more secure we will feel. However, Jesus teaches us to let go of these false idols and refocus our hearts on God, and store treasure in the heart of Christ.
In Saint Dominic, we see a great example of someone who valued education and teaching others, lived simply and served the poor, and gave his life for the greater glory of God.
Embrace the hammer!
Happy Feast of Saint Dominic!
