SAINT OF THE WEEK
St. Dominic
Dominic was born to a noble family in Caleruega, Spain. A famine left many people desolate and homeless across Spain. Dominic sold everything he had, including his furniture and clothes and bought food for the poor. Later, after joining a Benedictine order. Pope Innocent II asked him to go to a southern region of France to convert heretics back to the true faith. According to a legend, Dominic received a rosary during an apparition of the Virgin Mary. He became famous for his devotion, mercy and work. In 1215, Dominic was granted permission to form his own religious order where they would often travel the countryside to preach earning them the name of "The Order of Preachers." According to writings about him, Dominic chose for himself only the most meager of provisions, refused to sleep on a bed, often walked barefoot, and often praised God whenever he faced discomfort. He always kept with him a copy of the Gospel of Matthew and the Epistles of St. Paul which he read over and over again.
