Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Should Catholics be people spoiling for a fight? Not if they want to be good Catholics! Those who love fighting and arguing may very well find themselves in divided households, but not for the reasons Jesus really means. Courtesy, gentleness, and the finer details of charity should characterize the person who wants to be like Christ. These kinds of people seek to unite, not divide. When they are dividers, it is because they have to be. They know when the point arrives that if they bend any further, they'll break where flexibility would degenerate into infidelity. There are tough, sad moments when being faithful to Christ means a head-on collision in a very important relationship, such as the ones Jesus mentions. But when it's a question of where our first loyalty lies, there is no debate. Christ must come first.
The Collect prayer for Sunday, August 14
O God, who have prepared for those who love you good things which no eye can see, fill our hearts, we pray, with the warmth of your love, so that, loving you in all things and above all things, we may attain your promises, which surpass every human desire. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

St. Martin's Parish activities:
The Feast of the Assumption:
The Feast of the Assumption is one of the most important feast days of the year on the official Roman Catholic Church calendar. By tradition, the holy day is observed every August 15th. This year, the Feast of the Assumption occurs on Monday. Normally a Holy Day of Obligation, when this Solemnity falls on a Monday or Saturday, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated.
Update on CCD classes for this Fall:
St. Martin's Parish will begin CCD classes for all children of the parish, grades K thru 12, in September. CCD refers to the religious education program of the Catholic Church, normally designed for children. These classes not only educate children about Jesus and the Catholic faith, but prepare them to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation
, the Eucharist
, and Confirmation.
We encourage parents of children in this age range to take advantage of this opportunity to further your child's knowledge of their faith by enrolling them in these weekly classes. Registration will take place throughout the month of August.
