Fr. Moser's weekly message
[1] Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary [Aug. 15] is not a Holy Day of Obligation this year since it falls on a Monday. There will be two Masses on Monday: 8:30am in St. Patrick Church and 7:00pm in St. Mary Church (Dorchester); you’re invited to attend Mass and celebrate the Assumption of Mary into heaven.
[2] We hear in the news about wildfires in New Mexico, California, Colorado, and across our nation. In the opening line of this Sunday’s Gospel - Jesus exclaims, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” He spoke of setting the earth “on fire” … but it is a different type of fire that Jesus is referencing. The Holy Spirit is the source of this “fire.” Earlier in Luke’s gospel John the Baptist had said about Jesus that He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire . (LK 3:16)
Like a fire, the Holy Spirit changes or transforms everything it touches. What stirs up the fire within you? What warms your heart? Purifies your heart and soul? Enflames or moves your heart? Let us pray that our hearts will be filled with the purifying fire and warmth of God’s love.
The “Come, Holy Spirit” prayer begins: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love. … Therefore, may we keep the flame of faith and the fire of God’s love alive within us and burning through us into the world around us. Let us keep the fire of the Holy Spirit in our hearts and souls.
Questions to Reflect upon this week:
For Adults: When has your taking a strong stand on a moral issue created division rather than healing in the short term?
For children: Is it important to do the right thing even if others are angry as a result? Why or why not?
Weekly Justice Challenge
This week we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. It is a moving and amazing event. Mary is taken into heaven, body and soul. She offers hope of the Resurrection and life after death to all believers. Hope is very important in our lives. It helps us through times that are tough, it helps us grow and change and to accept challenges, changes, and the unknown. Your challenge this week is to take some time to pray about how you can offer hope to someone who really needs it. It may be a family member, a friend, someone with a serious illness or depression, or even a stranger, but find a way!. ©Center for Ministry Development.
