Dear St. Joan of Arc Parishioners,
As we all know, our parish festival is a big event each year. It is an opportunity for us to gather as a parish, as well as an opportunity to welcome the larger Powell and surrounding communities. Such an event requires many dedicated volunteers. We have a festival committee that works hard to provide this opportunity. We also have dedicated volunteers that often work multiple shifts. I am truly appreciative of all who have contributed to these events.
While the festival has continued to grow, which is a great thing, being able to adequately staff the event has continued to be challenging. Last year, while we were able to make the festival happen, the size of the crowd versus the number of volunteers presented many challenges and some concerns.
I met with the festival committee last evening. I received a great deal of helpful input. The discussion included steps that can be taken for this year, as well as whether or not we could make it happen. Opinions were on both sides of the issue, and I appreciate all of the input that was offered.
Beyond just volunteer numbers, which are down from last year, security and the total experience for both volunteers and those in attendance have to be considered. A bad experience at our festival can really affect future festivals. As difficult as it may be, I have decided that it is best that we not continue with the festival this year and spend a great deal of time reviewing what we can do moving forward to provide an opportunity for such a community celebration in the future. I know this is a disappointment for many who look forward to this event. Be assured that we will review any commitments. I thank our festival committee and those who had already volunteered generously of their time. Please know that this was a difficult decision for me. Also, know that the decision was made with the well-being of our parish and community in mind and heart. I pray for a relaxing end of summer for all of you and for all who are preparing to restart school very soon.
God Bless,
Fr. Black
