Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice, and said, “Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. (Lk 1:41-42)
Today, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Our gospel reading is the visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. Through the faith and obedience of these two women, the Lord puts into place his Divine plan for our redemption.
Mary is the example for all Christians in how to say “yes” to God. In her response which is known as the “Magnificat”, she models for us how to respond to His great invitation. She trusts that God wants to do this great work in her and she recognizes what a glorious privilege this is for her. She sees that it is entirely God’s doing. She is merely saying “yes” and her response will have ramifications for the whole world.
Today, let us prayer and rejoice with Mary, glorifying the Lord, who does great things for us.
