Every time we celebrate the Mass, we have the opportunity to lift our voices in song. Singing is woven into the very fiber of our liturgy for a reason. In the words of Pope Benedict XVI, “When man comes into contact with God, mere speech is not enough. Areas of his existence are awakened that spontaneously turn into song.”
To sing is to respond to God’s grace of salvation.
When the Israelites were freed from bondage in Egypt and passed through the Red Sea, their response to freedom was singing songs of praise to God.
When you and I are baptized into the family of faith—and whenever we renew our baptismal vows—our response to freedom is the same.
It is a response to The Song that has already been sung over us: “The Lord your God is in your midst, the Mighty One will save...He will rejoice over you with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17).
PRAYER: Come, Holy Spirit, fill my mouth with songs of praise in response to the One who has freed me from sin.
