Fifth Sunday in Lent
Climate change; because it is controversial for some people, I was not going to write about climate change. But a few weeks ago, while bringing Holy Communion to a parishioner who lives near the Hudson River, I was stunned to see how high the waves of the river were during our latest “northeaster”. With a rise of only three more feet that whole section of Yonkers would be flooded– as did happen during hurricane Sandy. I also realized that most of us will not take warning of future catastrophes seriously until it finally happens, by then it will be too late to save the lives of millions of people. For some the warming of the earth is not cased by humans. For most of us (including 97% of scientists) we know it is. But we don’t want to do anything too upsetting. Besides, we say to ourselves, it may be too disruptive to our society. Eventually laws will be passed e.g. Germany just passed a law forbidding the use of cars and trucks using diesel oil. I can see a time when Yonkers will return to the trolley system.
While looking at our beautiful Hudson River, I reminded myself to continue not using plastic bags when shopping for food (I do the shopping for the rectory). It is evident to me that despite the knowledge that these plastic bags are destroying billions of aquatic life in our oceans, many people will not give up their plastic bags. As a result a law will have to be created to forbid it. In Ireland, when a fee of 15 euros was imposed in 2002, within a year, 90% of shoppers were using reusable bags.
What do we do with our extra medications. Throw them down the toilet? Put them in the garbage? Some of the highest concentration of prescription drugs in the Hudson River was found near waste water treatment plants in Yonkers. There is a drop-off location for our extra pills. Call 914-813-5425.
If you are looking for a Lenten resolution, make one that will help our environment. Start by cutting down the use of your car. Walk more. It is good not only for the environment but also for your own health.
