SERVANT LEADERSHIP JOURNEY
Last week, the six grade students at OLG began their three-year Servant Leadership journey.
In the OLG Servant Leadership program, junior high students at our school practice their discipleship skills and learn to work together to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Each year, our students identify, propose, implement and evaluate three Magis community service projects. Magis comes from the Latin term “Ad majórem Dei glóriam” - for the greater glory of God. Magis projects inspire the students to ask, What more can I do for others, therefore doing more for God? This gives the students the opportunity to put Catholic Social Justice Teaching into action right here in our community.
The students learn that by Rite of Baptism, we are all called to be Disciples of Christ, and therefore must put deliberate practice to our leadership skills. While completing their Magis projects, our students practice the seven capacities of a servant leader: Servant First, Congruent Character, Compassionate Collaborator, Moral Authority, Skilled Communicator, Strategic System Thinker, and Foresight.
The eighth-grade OLG students, who are now in their third year of the program, lead the sixth and seventh graders through their servant leadership journey.

We are the last sign of hope for a woman or couple entering the clinic, deciding about an abortion. We are the first sign of mercy when they leave. Safeguard the Children
How to respond to choking, part one
In a choking emergency, it is important to respond quickly and effectively. Experts suggest reviewing maneuvers regularly so that you are equipped to respond to such an emergency. For children over the age of one, if a child is coughing, encourage him to keep coughing — this could be the quickest way to clear the airway. If a child is having trouble coughing, talking, or breathing, provide immediate help. You can attempt the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the object and clear the airway. For more information, read the VIRTUS® article, “How to Respond to Choking” at lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
