Patriot Day is observed annually on September 11th. It is a day dedicated to remembering and paying tribute to the 2,977 people killed and many people who were injured during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, in New York, Washington DC and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We remember the brave men and women as well who have died since that day in the War on Terror. Just as important, we need to remember how on September 11, 2001, amid shattered glass, twisted steel, and clouds of dust, the spirit of America shone through. We remember the sacrifice of strangers and first responders who rushed into darkness to carry others from danger. We remember the unbreakable bonds of unity we felt in the long days that followed -- how we held each other, how we came to our neighbors' aid, how we prayed for one another. We recall how Americans of every station joined to support the survivors in their hour of need and to heal our Nation in the years that followed.
In light of all that is going on in our nation these days, I encourage you to make an extra effort to do something good on the 11th, obviously coming together for Sunday Eucharist, say the rosary as a family, offer an act of penance or sacrifice. There is so much for which we need to pray! We pray to the Lord, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, the Queen of Peace, for a true and lasting peace throughout our world!
Also, just a reminder by a joint resolution approved 12/18/2001, (Public Law 107-89) has designated September 11th of each year as "Patriot Day" which also directs the flags be lowered to half-staff for the entire day on September 11. Please remember to fly your flag as a sign of respect and reverence.
