Need to knows:
Homecoming week:
1. Student dress up days.
Monday: Favorite sports day
Tuesday: Disney Character day
Wednesday: Pride Day
Thursday: Pajama Day
Friday: Orange and black for the Demons
2. High school band will be here on Friday to play for homecoming.
3. Mr. Hughes, high school band director, will be here on Thursday to let students try out band instruments if they want to be in the band. I sent a letter home earlier this week with information on being in 5th grade band and upcoming meetings. If you need another one, please let me know.
4. We have completed our beginning of year required testing. I've learned that I have some excellent readers. I think that we will have fun this year trying some new books and keeping a few old books too.
What are we doing in 5th grade?
Math: I am sure students are happy. We finally all understand multiplication. We had a very, very busy week working on multiplication. We will continue to review and practice multiplication because it really seemed to be hard for most students. However, we will also start to tie multiplication to division. We will be throwing in a little Algebra. Students will begin to write algebraic expressions on Thursday. We might attempt to evaluate expressions on Friday, but I'm thinking homecoming day might not be a good day to try something that new. So we will probably review on Friday.
Reading: In reading we worked on setting for quite sometime. Then we moved on to Characters and character traits. We will continue to work on characters and comparing and contrasting characters within a book and characters in two different stories. We will start to discuss who is telling the story in our books and how it would change if someone else was telling the story from their point of view. We will also discuss where the changing point is in a story and what happens at that point.
Spelling and language: We will have another spelling list. We will also continue to work on proofreading, sentence structure, and paragraph structure.
Writing: I have some really good writers. We are really moving quickly in writing. Students have completed descriptive paragraphs. I really have some talented writers in here. We will be starting Personal Narratives this next week. Students will listen to narratives, discuss what a personal narrative is, use graphic organizers to help them write their personal narratives and learn how to zoom in on one story and use the most important details on that story.
Social Studies: We will be finished with our maps and general information unit by the end of next week. Then we will go back to science.
