Women's Spiritual Direction at Holy Spirit Parish

Spiritual direction has grown in popularity in recent years, as Church leaders have reasserted its importance in the lives of not just the consecrated and religious, but the laity as well.

Speaking in 2011, Pope Benedict XVI recommended that “everyone, in fact, especially those who have heeded the divine call to follow Christ closely, needs to be accompanied personally by a guide reliable in doctrine and expert in the things of God.”

With this in mind Holy Spirit Parish will begin offering a spiritual direction resource for women beginning Friday September 30, 2022. Mrs. Mary Poirier, a Scottsdale resident, and member of our parish, will be available weekly (by appointment only) to assist in the formation of strong prayerful Catholic women with the aim to cultivate the spiritualization of the interior life and elevation of the soul through prayer.

in 2017 Mary graduated with certification in Spiritual Mentorship for women through The School of Faith and The Apostles of the Interior Life in Kansas City. Both are distinguished programs which function with the approval and guidance of Archbishop Joseph Naumann, of the Diocese of Kansas City, Missouri.

If you are a woman from the parish desiring some sound spiritual mentoring Mrs. Poirier will be available, each Friday in our parish office for spiritual direction.

Urgent request for the following:

“Grade One” class on Tuesdays 5-6pm

This section currently has two students enrolled and does not have a catechist or room assistant. Right now this section is on “hold” awaiting more enrollment and volunteers to conduct the class. Please pass this information along to those who may have children in this age group. Remember Grade One RE is essential and is counted as a foundational year.

Registration is ongoing for our various grades:

Atrium through Grade 12. Its not too late to register. For those seeking sacraments, your registration will close October 1st, 2022.

Church of the Holy Spirit is in need of nullity minister volunteers

Nullity Ministers are a vital part of the life of the parishes of the Diocese of Phoenix. These ministers are trained by the Tribunal to be present to those desiring to petition for an annulment. Through a four day class, Nullity Ministers gain important information in order to serve those who have obtained a civil divorce and are interested in petitioning for an annulment.

Nullity Ministers are parish volunteers who assist a person with submitting their necessary annulment related documentation to the Diocese of Phoenix. The Nullity Minister should have good computer skills. The four day training can be done either in-person or online. Please contact Deacon Gary Johnson at p19768@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering for this parish ministry.

The Safe Environment renewal period ended July 1st, and the grace period closed August 31st.

While only up-to-date volunteers can participate in ministry, we eagerly await your return as soon as you complete the diocesan Safe Environment requirements, and are in compliancy with guidelines.

Naming a child after a Christian saint or Biblical hero is a reminder for the child and everyone else that God is calling that child, like his or her Christian namesake, to holiness and heaven. A Christian name is meant to be a connection and continuity between earthly and eternal life.

When a person is presented for baptism and does not possess a Christian name, and when the individual or parents and priest are in agreement, a Christian name can be given to the person at the time of baptism. This provision must only be used when necessary and when there is agreement between the pastor and the individual or parents to add a Christian name.

The baptismal ceremony begins significantly with the priest or deacon asking the parents, “What name do you give your child?” This name is given before God. The Catechism says the child’s name and God’s name are thereby linked. “The sacrament of Baptism is conferred ‘in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.’ In Baptism, the Lord’s name sanctifies man, and the Christian receives his name in the Church.

The name is a holy icon of the person. Parents are being called back to connect the names of their children with the name of God and the names of those who have lived – and continue to live forever – in God’s holy name, entrusting their children to their namesakes’ saintly patronage so that one day the Good Shepard will call those children to His eternal right side by the names they’ve chosen for them.

The baptismal certificate must match exactly the name on the birth certificate. If inclusion of the new Christian name on the baptismal certificate is desired, it must be placed in the notations section only.
