What have we been doing in 5th grade?
Band: Yesterday the high school band director, Mr. Hughes, and his helpers, Kael Malichky and Mikaila Matheson came to help the students learn about many types of instruments. The students were able to try and play the instruments and ask questions about the band. They had so much fun.
Math: Students have been working on story problems and setting up expressions and not equations. We do not solve expressions, but we do solve equations. Next, week we should take a checkpoint of multiplication and a few story problems. Then we will move on to division.
Reading: We are still working on character, setting, and the point of view that a story is being told. We will be finishing up our book, "Fish in a Tree". We will continue with these concepts since 5th graders are expected to be able to compare and contrast characters and setting across books and within books.
Spelling: We will not have a spelling test this week. We have had a very busy week. I do not feel that I have adequately prepared the students for their test. We will practice more on Monday and Tuesday then have the test on Wednesday.
Writing: I absolutely love what the students are doing in writing class. They can really write. We will continue to work on personal narratives. Yesterday, I introduced the graphic organizer to them. They started to write a personal narrative on a day they got together with all of their relatives.
Science: We will be switching to Science next week. I have been so impressed with their knowledge of our continents and cultures around the world.
I have so many more pictures; however, enjoy the ones below. We had a fun week.
