Today we celebrate the feast of the archangels. Archangels are heavenly beings, who serve as messengers of God and guardians of human beings and creation. Today we honor the only three angels named in the Bible- Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The Archangels are very powerful and want to help us in our day-to-day life.
The name Michael means “one who is like God”. He is the protector of souls and draws his powerful sword against the aspirations of the devil who Jesus calls a “murderer from the beginning” and the “father of lies” who came to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 8:44, John 10:10). God provided Michael with the armor and weapons that would defeat Satan. Michael works as Heaven's top warrior, fighting evil with the greater power of good. Michael helps those who ask him to overcome any evil that has affected any part of their lives. He is known as the angel who rescues, protects, and safeguards humanity. Michael is very active in the ministry of deliverance and exorcism. He is a master at casting and driving demons out of human beings and places.
Gabriel means “God is my strength”. He is best known for bringing the Good News to Mary at the Annunciation, although he does appear elsewhere in the Old and New Testaments. The key message he brings us is hope - hope that God is always walking with us and hope that we can be saved. And boy do we need hope today!
Raphael means “God is my health”. He is one of seven angels “who enter and serve before the Glory of the Lord” (Tobit 12:15). The meaning of Raphael’s name reflects the fact that he touched Tobit’s eyes in order to heal them of blindness. Those who seek healing of body, mind, and soul ought to call upon the loving intercession of Raphael.
