The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." (Lk 17:5)

 

In today’s gospel, the apostles ask Jesus to increase their faith.  He replies to them saying, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you. (Lk 17:6) Mustard seeds are very tiny.  They vary in size from 1 mm to 3 mm.  They can grow from a tiny seed into a very large tree about 20 feet tall and 20 feet across.  

 

Our faith may be like a mustard seed.  It begins small and when properly cultivated it too can grow very large.  Through our prayer life, participating in the sacraments, reading scripture, and allowing the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, our faith grows.  

 

Let us pray asking the Lord to “increase our faith” like the apostles.
