The shield itself has many symbolisms that has been incorporated into it. The symbols are the Tree, an open book with the letters Alpha and Omega, the two stars, the waves, and the crown. The meaning for these symbols is as followed: The tree represents the Root of Jesse showing the lineage of St. Ann and where she comes from, this same image has also been given to Mary as well. The open book represents God and faith in which St. Ann has passed on her knowledge and
devotions to Mary who then will bear God, who is the Alpha and Omega meaning the First and the Last. St. Ann was often depicted in images reading the bible or handing on instructions to Mary. You also see in the image two stars. One star was taken from the City of La Vernia Logo and the other star was taken from the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Each star represents where we as a parish
comes from and belong to. The waves represent us as the faithful. The waves represent the change in flow we face throughout life. Our faith is like the waves that flows up and down, we have our high moments in life where we experience all our joys, and we also have our moments of our lows where we experience all our sorrows. Regardless, of where we are in life we should be flowing towards God.
Finally, the crown represents the crown of motherhood, St. Ann’s happiness was crowned when St. Ann gave birth to Mary who was elected by God from all eternity to become the mother of His only Son, Jesus Christ.
Good St. Ann, you were especially favored by God to be the mother of the most holy Virgin Mary, the Mother of our Savior. By your power with your most pure daughter and with her divine Son, kindly obtain for us the grace and the favor we now seek. Please secure for us also forgiveness of our past sins, the strength to perform faithfully our daily duties and the help we need to persevere in the love of Jesus and Mary. Amen.
