St. Gabriel's SVDP and Knights of Columbus organizations will be jointly conducting the 2022 Thanksgiving Food Drive, with donation going to approved local individuals and families, a poor parish in South Phoenix, and the reminder to resupply the Cave Creek Foothills Food bank. These donations are the 'lifeblood' for the unemployed, handicapped, and others who may be unable to provide for themselves!

The event kicks off the weekend of November 12/13, with food bags, envelopes, and guidelines distributed by SVdP & KofC volunteers at the church exits after each Mass. Please return your filled food bags the week of November 19/20 to St. Gabriel Parish. Watch for the Food bank Van, the Vinnies, and KofC volunteer vans/trucks in each of the church parking lots.

Should you prefer cash donations, envelopes are provided, and are always welcome.

Bishops of the Arizona Catholic Conference Statement on Unapproved Political Efforts

In light of the upcoming election on November 8th, the Bishops of the Arizona Catholic Conference are aware of different organizations and publications calling themselves “catholic,” but that do not represent the Catholic Church. These organizations cover various ends of the political spectrum and often engage in partisan political endeavors.

It should be pointed out that Canon 216 of the Roman Catholic Code of Canon Law stresses that no initiative can lay claim to the title “catholic” without the consent of the competent ecclesiastical authority. The use of the name “catholic” implies that the initiative in some way represents the Catholic Church. Hence the competent authority--in most instances the local bishop--must give permission for any entity, endeavor, or movement to call itself “catholic.” Those who do so without permission are in violation of Church teaching and law.

We must stress that the Catholic Church is always politically non-partisan. Moreover, it is worth recalling that the Catholic Church has a long tradition of our beliefs influencing our personal politics--not our personal politics trying to influence our faith. When we reverse those two, we place ourselves outside the tradition and teachings of the Catholic Church.

"We exist to bring every person into intimacy with Christ" is the Mission or Vision statement I have discerned for our parish of St. Gabriel the Archangel.

Why this? Because that is what St. Gabriel announced to Mary, as he was giving her good news that Jesus Christ, Savior of the world, wanted to be born in her. Well, Christ wants to "be born" in the hearts of every person in a deep and intimate way.

For many years I grew up believing in God, going to Mass on Sundays and religion classes. I knew aboutJesus but did not really know Jesus Christ intimately; but now that I personally know God's intimate love for me, it changes everything.

As a priest, I have come to see that I was not alone, and many Catholics still haven't come to know Jesus personally or intimately. If you are looking to continue to grow in your spiritual life, we are offering our 2nd annual parish-wide retreat. This Journey to Divine Intimacy retreat is a great next step to our Finding the Missing Peace retreat as it is meant to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to help begin the journey to divine intimacy with Christ.
