THE GOOD WORD
As we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ as King of the Universe, the Word of God gives answer to a basic question: What makes Christ the one true great King?
First, St. Paul reminds us that all things visible and invisible were created through Christ and for Christ. We’re told that “in him all things hold together,” and “all the fullness was pleased to dwell.” In other words, everything that makes God, God, is in Christ.
The Gospel reminds us that Christ as King reigns not from a throne but from a cross, not ruling over but giving himself over to us. What makes this King great is that he seeks union with others (common union, communion) not power over others. Like the good thief, we too can hear him say, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.”
This great King is not concerned with gaining more power, prestige, or possessions for himself, but is about enabling justice, compassion, and generosity among all of us who are not just his subjects but friends. This King invites us into a kingdom in which leaders are not first but last, seeking to be of service to all, first only in order to wash the feet of those least regarded. So let us proclaim not only this day but every day.
THANKSGIVING
The great German mystic Meister Eckhart once said that if the only prayer we ever prayed to God was “thank you” that would be enough. Please join us on November 24th, Thanksgiving Day, to make our prayer of thanksgiving to God for all that has been given and continues to be given to us. Mass on that day will be at 10:00am.
"MARANTHA, COME LORD JESUS"
Next Sunday begins the great season of Advent as we prepare for Christmas, for the celebration of God becoming fully human as one of us. With the first Sunday of Advent, we also begin a new liturgical year during which we relive the cycle of Jesus’ presence with us on earth in the flesh and celebrate his presence now with us in His Spirit.
ADVENT MORNING OF REFLECTION
I will be giving a morning of reflection on the season of Advent here at Sacred Heart. Advent is a beautiful season of HOPE, and it’s coming at a time when HOPE among us seems to be especially needed! Please join us for a HOPE-FILLED morning on the first Saturday of Advent, December 3rd from 9:30-11:30am in our church.
“GOD IS GOOD…ALL THE TIME, AND ALL THE TIME… GOD IS GOOD!
