Saint Ann Advent Reflections 2022
First Sunday of Advent
This set of readings is a fitting beginning to Advent! They remind us what it means to live in union with God, to anticipate the Second Coming of Christ, and to prepare and wait. We also see in these three readings an interplay of darkness and light, of night and day, and of the moment that darkness moves to light. This brightening at dawn, at the lighting of a candle, at the flip of a switch or insertion of a plug, prefigures Christ entering our lives and human history. Over the next several weeks, we will see the day at its darkest, culminating in the Winter Solstice right before Christmas, when the light begins to reclaim the day. As you light your candles and turn on your festive lights during this time, call to mind how Christ brings light to the world, dispelling the darkness, inviting us to participate in His glory.
How can you spread His light in your circle of family, friends, and acquaintances? Perhaps you can resolve to be more patient with your spouse, children, roommates, or parents. Maybe you can spare some extra change and a smile for that person on the corner you see each day during your daily commute. Perhaps you can do a small act of service for a coworker, classmate, or neighbor. Larger acts of service are always needed, especially at this time of year, but small acts of service done daily among the people we see most often are the key to lasting change in the world.
I hope that these daily reflections help you to embrace Christ's light and radiate Him for all to see. May God bless you during this solemn and joyful season of expectation, preparation, and, above all, love.
