Good afternoon!
I pray you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We will see the students back on Tuesday, November 29th.
Below you will find some reminders, a recap of our short week, and plans for next week when we return to school.
Prayer Requests
Prayer Requests:
For all St. James students, families, and staff to have a safe and blessed Thanksgiving break (from our class)
Reminders:
1. Please send your child with jackets/coats, hats, and gloves every day.
2. There will be no school this Thursday, Friday, or next Monday. Enjoy your Thanksgiving break!
3. Advent begins this Sunday.
4. Our new servers continue to do very well! Next Wednesday, Addison will be serving at Mass.
Recap of our Week:
3rd Grade Math: The 3rd graders finished their chapter on multiplication facts. They reviewed the chapter this week, played Kahoot, and took their tests.
4th Grade Math: The 4th Graders continued their unit on division. They learned how to divide two-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers and worked with interpreting the remainder which means knowing what to do with the leftover amounts (create a fractional part, ignore the remainder, use only the remainder, or add 1 to the quotient).
Reading: Our class finished their study of text features. They learned more about visual text features (tables, graphs, maps, diagrams, photos and captions). Students practiced analyzing text features in small groups.
Phonics/Spelling: Each group received their new lists of words. They worked on sorting and spelling their new words. The following are the skills we are working on: beginning consonant sounds, short a and long a (silent e), short o and long o patterns, short a and o with AR and OR, irregular plurals, and long o patterns in accented syllables.
Writing: The class continued working on their state projects. Due to our short week, only a few more students finished their projects. We will continue this after Thanksgiving break.
Social Studies: We continued our mini-unit on the Transcontinental Railroad. The students learned about why the railroad was built and studied the problems both companies faced during construction of the railroad.
Next Week in 3rd & 4th Grade:
3rd Grade Math: The class will begin the next chapter within our multiplication unit which has them apply the facts they learned in the last chapter. They will be learning how to describe multiplication patterns found in tables, find unknown factors, and use the distributive property to multiply.
4th Grade Math: The students will continue their unit on division. The students will learn how to estimate quotients using compatible numbers and how to divide numbers with up to 4-digits by 1-digit numbers using different strategies.
Reading: We will be focusing on distinguishing between fact and opinion next week. The students will learn how to determine whether or not information being given in a text is a fact (evidence provided to prove the statement) or an opinion (just how someone feels or thinks about something).
Phonics/Spelling: The groups will continue working with the lists they received this week. The groups will be working on the skills that were mentioned above in the recap. Students will be conducting different word sorts based on spelling and sound patterns. Their 8th assessments will either be next Thursday or Friday. Check your child’s word list to see when his/her assessment is.
Writing: The students will continue to work on their Slides presentations of their states. Our new goal is to have all of them completed by the end of the week.
Social Studies: We will continue our study of the Transcontinental Railroad. Students will learn about the impact the railroad and its construction had on different groups of people.
Have a blessed Thanksgiving break!
