Lessons and Carols at Williams
Saturday Dec 3 @ 4 pm and 7 pm
Thompson Memorial Chapel
Masks Required
The annual Christmas Service of Lessons and Carols at Williams College features choral music by the Williams Concert and Chamber Choirs, and the traditional reading of the biblical Christmas story.
There is no admission charge for the service but all are encouraged to bring an item of non-perishable canned or packaged food for local emergency food pantries. Collection boxes will be in the rear of Thompson Chapel.
Students, faculty and staff from the College, and members of the local community read the traditional “lessons” derived from the biblical Christmas story. Catholic Chaplain Bridget Power will offer A Prayer for the World and Chaplain to the College, the Rev. Valerie Bailey Fischer will offer a meditation on Luke 2. A free-will offering of money is received at the conclusion of the service.
The service, modeled on the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols first held on Christmas Eve in 1918 at King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, England, has been described as one that “presents the Christmas story in an ambiance of mystery, splendor, hope and joy.” The Service of Lessons and Carols has been a beloved holiday tradition at Williams since the 1960’s.
In a short talk labeled "The Impossible" Fr. Michael Zimmerman explores the impossible requests made in scripture. He encourages us to face the impossible knowing seemingly contradiction that God is with us even if we don't accomplish the task. What do you think?
When we allow darkness to overcome the light,
forgive us, Lord.
When we reduce Christmas to plastic and tinsel,
have mercy on us, Father.
When hardness of heart keeps us from seeing
and hearing and touching the needs of others,
let your grace consume us, O God.
When the wars around us are of no concern,
forgive us, Lord, and move us to compassion
for those who suffer.
When our caring is not extended to action,
move us to seek justice for our brothers and sisters.
We come to confess our sinfulness
before you and before each other.
Remove all barriers that divide us,
and let there be no obstacle to our love for you
and for one another. Amen.
