A little brainstorming and looking around at local yards made us decide that “sage” would be interesting, for its presence in so many holiday stuffing recipes, and its presence in so many gardens. A quick check of “Calscape”, the encyclopedic database of California native plants, taught us that our region is host to several native sage plants, including white, black, and even “Cleveland” sage.
In fact, the family includes some 960 members of a genus named “Salvia”, a sub species of sage. (We like the fact that the name "salvia" is derived from the Latin word meaning "to heal" or "to save").
