The 2nd Sunday of Advent is a time to prepare our hearts, our minds and our souls. We are reminded to reflect on our life. Like John the Baptist in our Gospel reading, we are to live in this world, but not of this world. We are to live our lives in anticipation of a reunion with God in Heaven.
We can choose to live our faith passively, or we can live it personally.
When we live our faith passively, we are like the Pharisees and Sadducees that came to be baptized by John in the Jordan river. They were the religious and social leaders in Israel. On the surface, they appeared to be models of their faith. They followed Jewish customs, but their religion was merely on the surface: it didn’t touch their hearts.
We too need to be careful not to make the same mistake. We live in a materially wealthy society today that for the most part suffers from poverty of spirit. Morality and common sense are falling apart, the result of a culture that lacks hope!
Jesus Christ is telling us today that it doesn’t have to be that way. God wants to convince us of his faithfulness. He wants us to discover true hope, the hope that comes from him, the hope that will never let us down. But he needs us to help him.
God revealed himself to the world 2000 years ago through two poor, working class people. Mary and Joseph. Through them, the Saviour entered the world. He wants to do the same thing now. He wants to enter this world we live in through you and me. Through our words, our example, and our actions. He wants to send Jesus into our lives, into our homes, into all our relationships.
But this can only happen if we let him.
