On this octave day of Christmas, we turn our attention to Mary, the mother of our Lord, as we contemplate her explicit role in the Incarnation and thus in the Christian faith. We do so, not by directing our gaze away from Jesus, but rather by contemplating the one who shows Jesus to us, and understanding the inseparability of Mother and Child. Indeed, from the Annunciation, through the visitation to Elizabeth, the birth in the manger, and the presentation of Christ in the Temple, Mary’s role is central.
It is a role that shows to us the intimate relationship between Mother and Child, a relationship that expresses better than words can the intimate relationship of God with humanity, of Creator to creature. Contemplating Mary should therefore allow us to contemplate more deeply the relationship that God wants to have with each of us, the relationship that He offers to us in the birth of His Son.
