Nominating Committee - Meet Your New Vestry Members
The Nominating Committee is pleased to present the following slate of candidates for election at St. Mark’s Annual Meeting on January 22, 2023
Chuck Knill – Junior Warden
Dawn and I moved to Basking Ridge in 1996, where we raised our six children.
A lifelong Episcopalian, I have been a member of St. Mark’s since 2003. I serve as the Verger, which encompasses many roles. In the past, I have served on the Vestry as Stewardship Chair, Co-Chaired a capital campaign, been a youth leader, a member of the Discernment Committee to Call a New Rector, built and led the Keansburg Ministry, and a diocesan convention delegate. I worked closely with Fr. Rick on the plans and protocols for the reentry of parishioners after the pandemic. In addition, I served the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey as a Trustee on the Diocesan Investment Trust Fund.
I have a thirty-plus-year career in various non-profit executive leadership roles. I am President of Curbing Hunger, Inc., Somerset County Youth Commission, Master Mason, Past Board Member, CASA of SHaW, Past President and Member of Kiwanis, Kiwanis Hixson Fellow, Board of Directors, United Way of the Oranges.
Ben Hargy – Building Commission
I have been happily married to Wen-Lin “Winny” Su for 20 years and have three wonderful children, twin boys, Andrew and Ryan, and a daughter Ella. Our family transplanted from Hartford, Connecticut to Basking Ridge in 2014. One sermon by Father Rick was all it took to find a home at St. Marks.
I have served as a lay reader for the 8 o’clock service for the past five years. The boys and I have alternatively been members of the intergenerational bell choir and the St. Marks bell choir from our beginning with the church. All of the children have participated in the SmArts program and youth group.
Outside of church, I am active in nonprofit work, having served in leadership positions for the past 20 years for charities in Connecticut, including current service as Chairman and Trustee of the Chinese Language School of Greater Hartford. I am also a volunteer tax preparer in the VITA program at the Bernards Township library. Professionally, I am a lawyer with corporate, contracting and insurance experience, currently advising a Japanese property and casualty insurer on a wide range of U.S. corporate and regulatory matters.
I look forward to continuing stewardship of the St. Marks’ buildings, trying to fill the large shoes of John Lyga and all who have maintained the buildings as a place of worship and community.
