Dear Parents of 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Students,
Your child will be bringing home a pink sheet with information for their Third Quarter Project.
This project is incorporated with the Catholic Daughters 2023 Education Contest. Please discuss the Themes with your child to help them come up with an imaginative, unique, creative way to communicate the message using one of the Categories listed. You will note in the Rules that students may enter more than one category for the contest. If they choose to do so, I will pick the one that gives the student the best grade to use for their 3rd quarter project. Students DO NOT need to present their projects to the class. They will go directly to the Catholic Daughters judging committee.
Please refer to the Guidelines for each category when helping your child with this project. (typed, length, paper size, no lettering, no clip art...) You may also want to check for proper and effective Technique before the entry is sent to school. For a writing piece, check for correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, paragraph form, and poetry elements. (I've included a couple of poetry handouts to help students who haven't written much poetry, but would like to give it a try.) For an art piece, students should be aware of balance, contrast, focus, motion, pattern, proportion, rhythm, and unity.
Projects must be turned in by the January 25th deadline set by the Catholic Daughters in order to qualify for the contest and any cash prizes available. Students will still need to turn in their project for their Faith Formation 3rd quarter project grade, but will lose one point for every class period past the deadline.
The Grading Sheet is on the back of the assignment sheet. Originality, how well the theme is carried out, and visible effort and neatness are subjective elements of this project. My opinion and that of the Catholic Daughters judging committee will not necessarily correspond, but I try to be as objective as possible. However, these elements count for over half of the points for both the contest and the 3rd quarter project, so it will be helpful if your child makes a special effort to create a unique, well thought out project!
As I told the students today, this is one of the most difficult themes I have encountered for this project! I'm very excited to see how our Saint James students carry out the theme in writing and art this year!
Please call or email if you have any concerns.
Through Him, with Him, and in Him,
Mrs. Fritz
