They Are Filled with Joy
A Reflection for the Epiphany of the Lord by Brent Smith
Director of Adult Faith Formation & Evangelization
During this 2nd weekend of 2023, the sacred nobility of Jesus is revealed to all
Religious and secular leaders alike awaited his coming, as did anyone who knew the prophecies about a triumphant Messiah sent to liberate & empower the Jewish people. In the Gospel of Luke, shepherds learn about the birth of Jesus, “today in
the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11-12). While weather-beaten shepherds receive the news of epiphany, so do sophisticated scholars of the starry sky.
Star-struck and filled with conviction, the three magi – aka, royal astrologers, or wise men – set off toward Jerusalem. Upon arrival there, they presume the whereabouts
of the king of the Jews is common knowledge. Instead, their presence alerts everyone's attention, especially those who wish to sabotage God’s will for His holy city. As a politician entangled in corruption, King Herod sought to preserve his own reign by any means necessary. In the case of Jesus’ birth, he wished to pay homage to the contradictory act of murder (see Matthew 2:13-16).
Balthazar, Melchior, and Caspar – legendary names of the Magi – present us with ideal responses to a moment of epiphany. Recognizing the star of the holy nativity has led them to Bethlehem and the home of the Christ child, they are filled with joy! As a sign of humility, they prostrate themselves. Then they present gifts of great significance. Finally, thanks to a message contained in a dream, “they departed for their country by another way” (Mt 2:12).
Please pray with me: Heavenly Father, thank you for revealing your merciful love through the infancy of Jesus Christ. Like the shepherds, may we set aside time to worship you. Like the Magi, may we seek you here and now. Grant us liberty from sin and empower us to live the Faith with conviction.
