PARISH NEWS AND NOTES

2022 Tax Statement for this year: The Parish Office will be sending out letters for the 2022 contributions to all parishioners who requested and received a letter last year. If you did not request a letter last year but would like one this year, please call the office or put a request in writing in the parish office side door mailbox, making sure to include your envelope number and contact information. Letters will be sent out around February 1. Tax letters will only go out to parishioners who are registered. The year 2022 has been closed down in the ParishSoft system. No further contributions for the year 2022 can be added to the system for the tax year 2022, Any envelopes received for the year 2022 as of this date will be included in the 2023 year.

Wedding Anniversary Mass to Celebrate the Vocation of Marriage: Bishop Roy E. Campbell will celebrate the Annual Wedding Anniversary Mass to celebrate the vocation of Marriage on Saturday, February 11, 2023, 10:00 am at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This Annual Mass is a celebration of the living vocation of all couples who provide a Catholic witness of the beauty of the Sacrament of Matrimony. Couples are invited to register with the parish office at 301-474-4322 to attend the Mass and/or receive a certificate from Cardinal Wilton Gregory in honor of their anniversary by January 20, 2023.

We are so happy that St. Hugh's has throughout the past three years continued monthly support for SOME (So Others May Eat) with breakfast foods. We purchase eggs, juices, grits, and bottled water and deliver to SOME. Please consider helping our efforts. There will be a box in the back of the church where you can drop off contributions of grits, juices, and bottled water. To donate money, you may place cash or checks made out to St. Hugh Church with SOME in the memo line in the collection basket or in the parish office side door mail slot. Other items SOME is grateful in receiving are travel size toiletries, ie. shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, feminine products, toothpaste and toothbrushes. Bless you for your continued generosity. The Christmas Bazaar Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the Annual Christmas Bazaar Raffle. Our winners for 2022 were Leigh Kelley, Mary Hooper, and Linda Kelley. Thank you again for your participation and we look forward to next year's raffle.

Lenten Parish Mission: Parishioner, Becky Bailey, will speak at all the Masses next weekend about our upcoming 3 evening March Lenten Parish Mission "Entering into a Deeper Experience of Christ" with speakers/music from the Franciscan Steubenville Retreat Center. The Mission will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beltsville. Becky has many years of experience with Steubenville retreats as Youth Group Coordinator.

Walking with Purpose

As we welcome the birth of Christ, the Walking With Purpose theme for 2023 is Cultivating the Garden of Your Heart. We pray for the grace to be open to the Spirit who will prepare our hearts to accept the seed - the Word of God made flesh- that we may embrace God's Word with a good and generous heart, and bear fruit in our families and in our parish and local communities.

Ordering Your Priorities

Our parish Walking With Purpose bible study groups will begin meeting again on Monday, January 23rd, in-person in the school library from 11:00am-12:00noon and via Zoom from 7:00-8:00pm. The name of our study is Ordering Your Priorities.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis Pain?

You love to walk but you have developed intense pain in the sole of your feet that makes it almost impossible to walk very far. You doctor calls it Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is a condition that is felt in the arch of the foot and can hamper or even stop people from enjoying walking as regular exercise.
Julie Donnelly, LMT, says, "there are four muscles that are key to releasing the pain in your arch. And they are easy to self-treat with just a little direction." These muscles are gastrocnemius and soleus. These muscles both merge into your Achilles tendon and pull up on your heel bone so you can stand on your toes. Two other muscles are the peroneal and tibialis anterior muscles.

One inserts into the long bone on the outside of your foot, and the other goes across your arch, inserting into the long bone on the inside of your arch. The important point to consider is that all four of these muscles insert into the bones that form your arch.

When your calf muscles are tight, they are pulling back on your heel bone, but since your arch muscles originate on your heel bone, they are being stretched backward. When the Tibialis Anterior muscle is pulling on the long bone on the inside of your arch, it's causing pain on that bone, so you feel pain in your arch. Your arch is being pulled in three different directions, the outside, inside and back toward your heel and of course, you will have pain in your arch.
Treatment: Get a used tennis ball and kneel on the floor. Place the ball to the outside of your shin bone and move your leg forward so that the ball rolls down toward your ankle. If you start to feel a cramp in your arch, just curl your toes. You'll find a tender spot about midway down the muscle. This is the muscle spasm that is putting pressure on the inside of your arch. Repeat this treatment until it no longer hurts. Ms. Donnelly has found this self-treatment to be extremely effective for her clients to relieve Plantar fasciitis pain.
