Seventh Sunday of Easter
If I was on the hillside watching Jesus ascend into heaven I would have been greatly discouraged. When I first followed Jesus of Nazareth, I expected he would bring the Kingdom of God on earth-not just a spiritual kingdom but a physical one with Jesus now proclaimed the king. While he was on the cross, I expected his father to rescue him. But he died horribly. When he rose from the dead, I again expected that he would remain on earth and be a living proof to the world of his direct relationship to God. He would then change the world. When this didn’t happen I expected that he would come back soon to renew the face of earth. It is not an exaggeration to say many of Jesus’ followers had these same expectation. I am sure many abandoned this lost cause. Others remained faithful. It was a very difficult time. That it is why I am fascinated and encouraged by the history of early church. How did they do it? They said it was Pentecost.

Seventh Sunday of Easter: Today we celebrate Mother’s Day, honoring our mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, and all those who have acted as mothers in our lives. Perhaps we can see our mothers in the words of John in the second reading; “If we love one another, God remains in us, and God’s love is brought to perfection in us” (1 John 4:12). For many of us, the love we have received from our mothers and has remained in us is a wonderful model of the love of God for us.
