From Fr. Colin
In the gospel reading for today, the specifics of Christian ethics is outlined by Jesus in the Beatitudes.
Here we have the list of how we are to act in the world and among ourselves, a list that distinguishes our actions from that of a general “do no harm” policy, or an attitude of “tolerance” which really just boils down to “if you leave me alone, then I will leave you alone.” “In the Beatitudes our Lord describes the key qualities he wishes to arouse in disciples as poverty of spirit, humility, docility to the Word of God, a spirit of penitence, hungering and thirsting after justice, mercy, and purity of heart.” “The qualities listed by Jesus are … the qualities needed for a Kingdom-centered life in the presence of God.” “If we are Christians then we hold that only the pattern of virtues disclosed in the Gospel really prepares our personalities for the vision of God.”
Thus it is that we are called to something more than just being nice to one another, more than just acting with respect. We are called to embody Christian virtues to such an extent that, not only do we prepare ourselves for the vision of God, but we present Christ himself to those around us so that they may come to see the importance and the difference inherent in living an authentic Christian life.
We are called to be witnesses, and through such grace as God provides, to allow our witness to shine forth in the hearts of others such that they too may be converted to a Kingdom-centered life.
