The messiah that Jews were expecting was a warrior-king like David, who would conquer the Roman Gentiles, not save them. No one expected that God himself would somehow come personally as the promised messiah, and that his path to glory would involve suffering. Jesus is this awaited Messiah, the Divine Son of God. He disclosed his identity very clearly to those who understood his words and deeds in light of their biblical significance. Ironically, it was his opponents who understood the implications of what he said and did better than his own disciples. It wasn’t until Jesus rose from the dead and imparted to his followers the Holy Spirit that they fully understood the truth about Jesus (John 16:13).
