“Grave Thoughts”
After months of reorganization, the
the St Joseph of Arimathea Ministry.
is proud to announce that our beautiful Holy Cross Cemetery is again open for business.
What does this mean? It means we are ready again to sell gravesites to our parishioners and catholics in our community.
While this reorganization continued, the ministry prioritzed the handling of many family interments.
If you are interested in planning a funeral which includes choosing a site for you or family member to be interred, please contact Annette Flagg in the Holy Cross office at 434 846-5245.
We can then arrange for a meeting and walk through of the cemetery grounds for that purpose.

The St. Joseph of Arimathea Cemetery Ministry
extends a warm “thank you” to Dr. Richard Zechini for crafting this beautiful Ossuary for the use of any Holy Cross family that is in need.
An ossuary is literally any container used for the burial of human bones: it can be an urn, box, chest, or vault. This one provides a beautiful structure for use at a funeral, where the family has chosen a less expensive route for final interment.

Death
Loretta Larzelere died January 19. Visitation will be held Friday, January 27, 2023, from 5 until 8 pm at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, Va., with the Rosary starting at 5:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 28, 2023, 12:30 pm at Holy Cross.
Mass and Rosary with Pilgrim Icon of St. Joseph
Friday, January 27th at 9am
Come and join us for a special Mass and prayer service in honor of St. Joseph this Friday morning. This beautiful icon is visiting us this week as a part of the Knights of Columbus’ Pilgrim Icon Program. It is usually housed at St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, Canada’s preeminent Shrine to St. Joseph.
If you can’t make it for Friday Mass, please stop by our Divine Mercy Chapel anytime this week to see and pray with the icon. The icon will be here through Sunday afternoon, January 29th.

UPDATES IN THE SANCTUARY!!
New Sanctuary Speakers
During the week of January 23rd the sanctuary speakers will be replaced and upgraded. The existing speakers which date to the 1986 church refurbishment, will be replaced with new speakers mounted in the same approximate location. The new speakers incorporate a design that can send more sound toward the back of the sanctuary than to the front of the sanctuary. Also two new speakers will be added of similar design that will fill in sound in the area around the altar which has been a dead zone.
During the week of January 23, scaffolding will be assembled near the speakers, the workers will cease work for daily mass which will be held as usual.
Sanctuary Renovation
On Wednesday, January 11th, the sanctuary renovation committee, including Fr Sal, held a meeting with our new architect, Jim Vernon, of the Architectural Partners of Lynchburg, VA. Our previous architect, Joe DeVylder of O’Brien and Keane of Arlington, VA developed a renovation concept and then suggested we utilize a local architect to prepare the final design and construction drawings.
Jim has offered the committee many variations using computer generated photo realistic renditions of the renovation with a variety of design variations, colors, trims, etc. The committee spent considerable time reviewing the options and was able to agree on a number of desired features. Much progress was made.
Jim will take the design decisions and create new renditions for the committee’s review in a meeting scheduled for January 25th at 1 pm in the commons. All are welcome to this meeting.
The next step is to complete the design and prepare with Master Engineers a bid package to be submitted to local contractors. The plan is to start construction in early summer of 2023.

2021 Jesse Tree Ministry
Elves Delivered! This past week Jesse Tree gifts, food, and even stockings for the younger children, were distributed to 77 households in our area. Families came from our parish community, as well as those referred to us by Interfaith Outreach Association, Lynchburg Social Services, Miriam’s House and McGurk House.
Thanks: Many thanks to all those who made the 2021 Jesse Tree Ministry a success!
We will resume distributing the monthly bags in the Commons the first weekend in February.
