Presentation of the Lord, Thursday, February 2
Blessing of Candles and Blessing of Figures of the Child Jesus (Santo Niño)
Mass Schedule:
8 a.m. (English)
7:15 p.m. (bilingual)
There will be a blessing of candles at our Masses here at OLG on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, Thursday, February 2. It has long been the tradition in the Church to bless candles at the beginning of Mass for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2 (another name for this feast is “Candlemas Day”). We use lit candles in our prayer and worship to remind us of the light of Christ. In the Gospel for the Presentation of the Lord (Luke 2:22- 40), Simeon rejoices when he sees the Child Jesus being presented by Mary and Joseph in the Temple in Jerusalem, describing Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory” for the Jewish people. So the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is a good time to focus on Jesus as the Light of the World – and the light of our lives.
At these Masses, we will bless not only the different types of candles that are used in the church throughout the year, but also any candles that you bring from home to be blessed. We encourage you to bring not only the candles that you use at prayer time, but all of the candles that are used in the home for different purposes and occasions. For example, perhaps you could buy all of the birthday candles that you will use for the year and bring those to be blessed on February 2 – that way, you and your family will be reminded of the presence of Christ and his light in every birthday celebration.
At the end of the Masses, there will be a blessing of figures of the Child Jesus (Santo Niño), as is the custom in some parts of Mexico, the Philippines and elsewhere.
8 a.m. (ingles)
St. Blase Blessing of Throats, February 3-5
Celebrating the Memorial of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, the blessing of throats will be given at the end of all Masses on February 3 (8 am) and the weekend of February 4-5.
The Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Blase on February 3. St. Blase was a physician and later a bishop in late 3rd century/early 4th century Armenia (in modern-day Turkey). St. Blase is said to have miraculously cured a little boy who nearly died because he was choking on a fishbone. From that miracle came the tradition of the blessing of throats on the Memorial of St. Blase: a priest, deacon or lay person touches two blessed candles in the form of a cross to the throat of each person while saying the following: “Through the intercession of Saint Blase, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
What is the meaning and purpose of the blessing of throats? The official Book of Blessings of the Church instructs: “Suffering and illness have always been among the greatest problems that trouble the human spirit. Christians feel and experience pain as do all other people; yet their faith helps them to grasp more deeply the mystery of suffering and to bear their pain with greater courage… Part of the plan laid out by God’s providence is that we should fight strenuously against all sickness and carefully seek the blessings of good health, so that we may fulfill our role in human society and in the Church… The annual blessing of throats is a traditional sign of the struggle against illness in the life of the Christian . . . The blessing of Saint Blase is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick” (Book of Blessings 1622ff).
