We just had a good discussion of this year's Christmas Book: “A Father who keeps His promises - God's Covenant Love in Scripture" by Scott Hahn. When we chose the book, we knew that we could not go wrong with Scott Hahn. However, we also knew that it would take more time to read than any of the 12 earlier books distributed at Christmas. Choice
Abortion advocates do not want to talk about facts or science, but they love to talk about "choice". They refuse to be called "pro-abortion", but they gladly accept the label, "prochoice". Indeed, nothing has so clouded and confused the politics of the abortion debate more than the misconstrued application of this word. For years, abortion advocates have sought to bestow upon "choice" a nobility of its own, thereby avoiding discussion of what is being chosen.
The fact is that "choice" is nothing apart from the context to which it is applied. Laws against rape, murder, assault, theft, and drunk driving (to name a few) are all "antichoice". They remove choice in order to protect a more fundamental freedom.
In the final analysis, we are only free to choose so long as that choice does not harm another person. For example, a person cannot choose to rape another person because rape is a violent assault on another human being. And so is abortion.

The wearing of ashes is a common penitential practice throughout the Old Testament. One example is found in the writings of the prophet Jeremiah: “Thus says the Lord . . . O daughter of my people, gird on sackcloth, and roll in ashes; make mourning as for an only son, most bitter lamentation; for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us” (6:22-26). Ashes and other penitential practices can do great good for our souls, helping us keep in mind death and the transience of the world. Catholic Answers
