Charisms of Grace
Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a divine enablement, infilling of grace, to be holy and in unity with God and others of the Body of Christ. St. Augustine de- scribed divine enabling as the Holy Spirit influenc- ing one's mind and heart to be receptive to a rela- tionship with God. Free will to choose between self or God is not violated, but without enabling grace we would see the world only from the per- spective of our senses and emotions. Enabling grace is at work when we feel there is more to life than what we are experiencing. It is God working in our hearts to love and serve others rather than being the focus of other's service. (cf. Matthew 23:11-12)
Charisms (CCC 799-810) are graces of the Holy Spirit for the spiritual good of individuals, the church, and the world. We are familiar with the following seven gifts of the Holy Spirit from our Sacrament of Confirmation training.
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit found in Isaiah 11:2-3 are wisdom, understanding, counsel, forti- tude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord. (CCC1830)
St. Paul made it clear to the early church at Corinth there are many types of God-given gifts and ser- vices before listing nine gifts. These are also termed charismatic gifts:
Word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, the working of miracles, prophecy, the ability to distinguish between spirits, various kinds of tongues, interpretation of tongues. (1 Corinthi- an 12:4-11)
In addition, there are the fruits of the Holy Spirit that some also consider gifts of the Holy Spirit since they are perfections enabled by grace. CCC1832 The fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: "charity, joy, peace, patience, kind- ness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithful- ness, modesty, self-control, chastity."
We may ask ourselves: Do the fruits of the Holy Spirit define our character? Do you instill the pres- ence of love and humility in others?
Are you active in ministry for or on behalf of the church?
