Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
On July 1, 2018 I will have retired and begin living in the beautiful retirement home for priests in Riverdale. As of this writing I do not know who will become the next pastor of St. Mary’s. I am now in the process of choosing the books I want to bring with me. There is room for 150 books. I now own about 1000 books. While going through my books, I came across a text book, “De Trinitate” that I studied during my third year (1963) at the Gregorian University in Rome. It was written by Fr. Bernard Lonergan, a very distinguished theologian, who was trying to help us understand how it is possible that there can be three in one, i.e. three persons in one God. He used the analogy of the three steps our mind uses to reach a conclusion. He did not attempt to help us consent in faith to the doctrine of the Trinity.
What analogy could we use today? I would love to have Fr. Lonergan (he died in 1984) use quantum physics as a way of learning more about the triune God. Quantum theory is about physics of atoms and their ever smaller constituents and cousins (billions of them). It is the most successful theory in all if science. Its power to grasp the unseen microscopic world has brought us modern marvels e.g. I-phones, internet, the Cloud where we can store billions amount of information, etc. Everything is in relationship to something else. It even opens up the possibility of alternate worlds.
I will try to keep up to date on this debate. It might prove to be the pivotal moment in history when the secular world turns to God. At the least it will be a good mental exercise for my retirement years.
Monday, May 28, 2018: Memorial Day; Over the years the number of who participate have dwindled to so few that it is time to end this custom. So therefore there will not be a Mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery this year. The rectory office will be closed in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday.
Collection : the collection for last Sunday, May 20, 2018 was $3,227.00
The 2nd collection this Sunday is our monthly Church Property Insurance collection
Next Sunday we will once again collect food for the needy in our community so please remember them when you are food shopping this week. Thank you for your generosity.
Most Holy Trinity; We say “ In the name of the Father, and the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”, not in the names of the Father, Son, and Spirit. For God, though three persons, is One. This is perhaps the most central mystery of our faith. Today we have the opportunity to reflect on the reality that God, though One, was able to send the Son and the Holy Spirit to us, to save us and to be with us forever.
First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:32-34~As on Sinai, the Lord descended in fire and wind.
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 33~ “Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own”.
Second Reading: Romans 8:14-17~ You received a Spirit of adoption, through whom we cry, “Abba, Father!”
Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20~ Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
