The Good Word
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” In that line from our second reading today, St. Paul tells us who and whose we are! We are holy temples of God because through our baptism/confirmation the Spirit of God is dwelling in each of us.
God, then, in our first reading from the Book of Leviticus helps us to see what this holiness of ours is to look like. One who is “holy” doesn’t nourish hatred for someone but seeks to forgive them regardless of what they have done. When it is necessary to correct a person, one who is “holy” does so with the intent of helping them to improve knowing that they themselves have plenty of room for improvement.
In our gospel passage Jesus challenges us to see that anyone can do what comes naturally; that is, to love those who love you (even scoundrels go home at night and kiss their babies). So, to be “holy”, he says, is to “love your enemies” and “to pray for those who persecute you.”
In short, Jesus reminds us that we are to be “holy” because this is the way God is, and we are the children of God. As “holy” people if we are ever in doubt what to do, we are to remember the GOLDEN RULE:
“DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU!”

This Lent as members of the Body of Christ here at Sacred Heart we’ll have the opportunity to do something positive together. At each of the weekend Masses throughout Lent we’ll provide each person attending Mass with a name tag to wear so that we all have the opportunity to call each other by name and perhaps get to know each other a little better.

Feb. 19: Meatfare, Orthodox Christian: Meatfare Sunday is before Lent/The Great Fast and is a preparation for Lent.
Feb. 20-26: Cheese Fare, Orthodox Christian: The last week before the Great Lent. Meat is already forbidden (after meatfare) and during Lent: meat, fish, dairy, and eggs are forbidden.
Feb. 21: Mardi Gras/Shrove Tuesday, Western Christian: Shrove means “to be absolved” and Carnival means “to remove meat.” This day is often seen as a time to “party” one last time before the discipline of Lent begins.
Feb. 22. Ash Wednesday, Western Christian. The Season of Lent begins. Six and a half weeks — not including Sunday when we as Christians pray, fast, and give alms preparing for the Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter.
Feb. 25-01 March: Ayyam-i-Ha/Intercalary Days: Baha’i: Four days of merriment and gift giving expressing gratitude to God while acting in unity with friends and family. The Baha’i 19-day fast will follow.
