Happy Saturday Saint Augustine Family,
This Sunday, March 26 at the 10:00 a.m. Mass, the Church celebrates the Third Scrutiny Rite for those who will be Baptized at the Easter Vigil. They are now called the Elect.
As previously shared, the Scrutiny Rites are celebrated to help deliver the Elect from the power of sin, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (RCIA 141). The Rites of Scrutiny are ancient Rites, meant to uncover, and then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the Elect and to bring out in them all that is upright, strong and good.
Three Scrutinies are celebrated in the parish community on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent and they are respectively associated with three Gospels: The Samaritan Woman at the Well; The Man Born Blind; and The Raising of Lazarus.
Lent is a time for all Christians to examine our lives and reflect more deeply on our ongoing conversion to Christ; to scrutinize our own lives and identify those areas that are weak or sinful then turn back to God’s loving mercy for healing and strength. While the Scrutiny Rites are directed toward those preparing for Baptism, their call to self examination is intended for the whole church, including those preparing for Confirmation and Holy Communion.
Please join in praying for the Elect and listen to the words of the intercessions and the prayers, and reflect on their meaning for your life, too. Let the Scrutinies call you to a closer walk with Christ, who is the Living Water, the Light of the World, the Resurrection and the Life.
