Treasure Box Activity
In the Gospel of Matthew we read that magi came and presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Frankincense had practical uses at the time but was also burned as incense at the temple in Jerusalem. It was precious and is believed to have been a recognition by the Magi that Jesus was THE High Priest. We use incense at Mass on special occasions and during funerals. It represents our prayers rising to heaven as we read in Psalm 141. Also during those Masses, the altar, the priest, the book of the Gospels, the body and blood of Jesus, and the congregation are incensed as a reminder of the holiness and real presence of God found in the Word of God, the Eucharist and in the people gathered. It’s awesome when the priest/deacon bows to us and blesses us with the incense and then we bow in return. It’s like we are recognizing the holy presence of God in one another! Try to recognize the presence of God in each person you meet today.
