Faith in Action East Bay is an organization dedicated to training our community on how to organize to fight for the resources we need to live in neighborhoods with safety, dignity, and equality. We are deeply evaluating the current housing crisis in the East Bay and are asking our neighbors what their experiences are at this point in time. Parishes in Action (PIA) offers opportunities of encounter, formation, direct service, and advocacy to assist the church of the Diocese of Oakland in its response to Christ’s call to be the Church on the Streets. We aim to serve the marginalized and build relationships with the whole church community.
Receive special formation rooted in Catholic Social Teaching. Provide an experience of encountering God as a foundation for caring for those in need. Parish in Action Teams will receive hands-on training in skills for effective parish engagement. These skills include:
- Building teams
- Identifying and engaging leaders and participants
- Facilitating meetings
- Becoming mentors
- Using faith-sharing resources

Have you heard the good news? St. Mary’s Center is celebrating 50 years of serving the community this year! We began providing Sunday Dinners in 1973 as a response to West Oakland Senior residents’ need for meals on Sundays, when neighborhood stores and restaurants were closed.

For the past 30 years, St. Mary’s Center has held an annual Gala to celebrate our work and partnerships. Our Gala is our primary event to help fund St. Mary’s Center programs. Annually, it brings together more than 200 of our most loyal supporters from throughout the East Bay area to celebrate the vital work of St. Mary’s Center and to raise funds for our important programming. We look forward to renewing this tradition with our community members once again this June!

J.T. Johnson is a civil rights activist and business consultant. He is a National Board Member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and President and CEO of Coach Consulting, Inc., a business management and strategic business solutions company.
As a Field Organizer in the 1960’s J.T. assisted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rev. Ralph Abernathy in their efforts as they navigated the explosive climate of the Civil Rights Movement that plagued the nation. After more than 51 years J.T. Johnson has remained committed and dedicated to social change in our society as he continues to carry out thevision of Dr. King.
