What is the 40 Hours Devotion?
The 40 Hours Devotion is 40 hours of continuous prayer before the exposed Blessed Sacrament, where we come face-to-face with Our Lord. 40 hours is the number of hours Jesus spent in the tomb between His death and resurrection. The number 40 is also found repeatedly throughout the Old and New Testaments, including: the number of days Jesus fasted and was tempted in the wilderness, the days of rain causing the great flood during Noah’s time, and the years of journey the Israelites wandered in the desert. The 40 Hours Devotion is an opportunity to gather as a community before the Blessed Sacrament and pray before the Lord in solemn Adoration. It gives us time to deepen our appreciation of the importance of the mystery of the Eucharist in our lives.
