Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, when we celebrate Our Lord's triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. It also marks the beginning of Holy Week to prepare us for the greatest tragedy and sorrow of the year...Jesus 'crucifixion and death on the Cross,
Jesus' triumphant return to Jerusalem is only one side of the story.
After this, Jesus was summoned to Bethany. There He raised Lazarus from the dead, a miracle which wins Him such renown among certain Pharisees that they decide finally to end His life.
Then came Holy Thursday when we commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus, when He established the sacrament of Holy Eucharist prior to His arrest and crucifixion. It also commemorates His institution of the priesthood.
Just as a point of interest, the Last Supper has been the subject of art for many cen- turies, including the great masterpiece of Leonardo Da Vinci...and the cup used by Jesus is known as the Holy Grail.
Holy Thursday was more than Christ's last meal with His disciples...it was the night of nights that changed the world! Following the Last Supper, the disciples went with Jesus to the Mount of Olives, where He would be betrayed by Judas. Good Friday is still another story...the day of the crucifixion of Christ.
But there was more...before His execution He was flogged...He was crowned with thorns...He was ridiculed. During Christ's last few hours on the cross, darkness fell over the whole land and Jesus spoke His last words:
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Following the incredible events of the day, the body of Christ was removed from the cross and laid in the tomb according to
custom.
