While Tim and I were in Ohio last weekend, we passed by a little corner church several times during our stay. On their sign it said, "The journey of Lent leads to the cross." Something about that statement just didn't feel quite right to me, and I started thinking about how our Lenten journey BEGAN with a cross on our foreheads as a reminder of our humanity and frailty and need for Jesus, the one who heals us and makes us whole. And yes, this evening when Lent is over and we enter into the three day liturgical season we call the Triduum, we will again visit the powerful symbol of the cross tomorrow on Good Friday.
The cross demonstrates how far Jesus was willing to go to save us and live out what true, sacrificial love looks like. But the cross wasn't Jesus' final destination and it isn't ours either. We aren't "Good Friday People". We are "Easter People!!" For us, the journey of Lent doesn't lead TO the cross, but rather leads THROUGH the cross because without the cross there is no empty tomb, no resurrection, no eternal life. This is why Good Friday is "good," because it is holy, and despite the pain, torture, injustice, and suffering of the cross, sin and death don't win! Love has the final word... ALWAYS.
