Dona ei Requiem
One of the hardest things I’ve had to do in my life was to bury my father. Dying at the age of 59 his death was expected due to his cancer, but still a shock when it happened. When a loved one dies, no matter the circumstances, there is always an emptiness and I’ve learned as a priest that no two people grieve the same way.
For many people, a parish becomes like a family member. Like our family members, parishes have stories, defined by the people who encountered God through the Sacraments and the preaching of the Gospel. A parish becomes not just a building where we go to pray, but a part of our individual stories. Sometimes, a parish becomes the only thing remaining of a lineage and a past to remind us of how things used to be or where we came from, a link to the past.
The reality for all of us, is that our time on earth is fleeting, as we read in the Psalms:
“Seventy is the sum of our years,
or eighty, if we are strong;
Most of them are toil and sorrow;
they pass quickly, and we are gone.” – Ps 90:10
This weekend we will celebrate the last Mass at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Goodland. Like all of us, this parish has a story. When my father died, I was tasked by my family to write the obituary. I feel that it is important that Ss. Peter and Paul Church, such an important member of so many people’s families, have an obituary for such a solemn occasion.
Mission 1872-1900; Saints Peter and Paul Parish 1900-2023
In the late nineteenth century, Goodland was a mission with priests attending from Kentland in Newton County and St. Anthony in Benton County. In 1880 the mission congregation grew to 15 households. When the parish grew to 50 households in 1900, plans for the current brick church were put into action and the congregation was established as a parish. In 1900 Ss. Peter and Paul took over the Morocco, Indiana Mission (Sacred Heart of Jesus Church) caring for three families, and 14 souls; which was later discontinued. On July 12, 1903, Bishop Alerding (bishop of the Fort Wayne Diocese to which the parish belonged at the time) dedicated the present church building. The present church is a brick edifice, 98x54 feet, with a seating capacity of 250. The number of souls in 1907 was 325, consisting of 55 families. In 1911 Mount Calvary Cemetery, Goodland was established.
From these beginnings, this community, which was established as a mission in 1872 and which was elevated to parochial status in 1900 and placed under the patronage of the Apostles Ss. Peter and Paul. In subsequent generations, many people have heard the Word of God, have worshiped, and have received the sacraments of the Church in Ss. Peter and Paul Parish. Grieving families were comforted by funeral dinners offered from the generosity of loving friends. Many from the area came to partake of the annual Chicken dinner. Countless gifts of sweat and time were given over the years to aid in the parish’s mission.
In recent times, the active population of Ss. Peter and Paul parish has fallen below the numbers when the parish was erected in 1900. Due to many other factors, the mission of Ss. Peter and Paul parish was drawn to a completion on April 1, 2023, when the parish was merged with Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Remington, and the parish ceased to exist after 123 years. As a result of the extinctive union, beginning on Sunday, May 28th, 2023, Sunday Masses will henceforth be celebrated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Remington, with the last Mass being offered by the Bishop of Lafayette-in-Indiana, Timothy L. Doherty on May 21st, 2023, and the building then being reduced from the dignity of a sacred edifice for recovery of the land, per episcopal decree dated April 28th, 2023.
“Well done, my good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:21
Please Pray your Rosary
I invite all our pastorate family to offer up a rosary this week for the many people mourning the loss of Ss. Peter and Paul Church. May Mary, Our Lady of Consolation, bring peace and consolation into the hearts of all those who are grieving and hurting at this loss.
God Bless,
Fr. Bennett
