Dear Parishioners,
Jesus was never focused on His earthly accomplishments: spectacular healings, amazing public performances or praises from other people. Our fearless Leader was beyond all these things.
When he taught us the Our Father prayer, from the very first words he set a very clear direction for us: Our Father who art in Heaven. This is what our teacher and Savior cares about, the Father and Heaven. He wants to lead us to his Father (John 20:17) and he is willing to prepare a place for us in Heaven (John 14: 3). That’s the beauty of our faith that our treasure is not from here, but rather it’s hidden in the future.
It is so easy for us to be confused by this world and its attractions. Things of this world are trying to steal our focus and attention, but Jesus is teaching us to set our hearts on our eternal future. He wants for us to be with Him in his Kingdom. That’s the goal and the greatest spiritual dream. Everything else becomes secondary.
As we celebrate The Ascension of Jesus, we must remind ourselves who we are as believers and what the priorities should be in our life. We may have our questions, doubts and weaknesses, like the Apostles, but we need to find courage to trust Jesus in spite of them. God and His love are bigger than our sins and imperfections.
Today’s celebration is one of the most challenging moments for the Apostles, because Jesus is going back to his Father and they will remain in the world. They will have to learn how to become witnesses to the One who changed their lives and radically converted their hearts. May this beautiful day be for us an inspiration to reflect on our own life:
How is Jesus changing my life?
How is he effecting my daily obligations: my work, my relationships, my dreams?
How would my life look like without Jesus and the eternal hope that comes from faith?
Is Jesus the source of my joy and peace?
May God Bless You abundantly,
Father Rafael
