To celebrate the Feast Day of our parish patron, the Holy Spirit, on Saturday, May 27th at the 4:30pm mass, we will celebrate the Pentecost Extended Vigil Candelight Mass. Please expect this mass to last longer than other masses: roughly an hour and half.

With a history that stretches back to the early Church, this more elaborate form of the Pentecost vigil Mass celebrates in a very special way the mystery of the Holy Spirit coming upon the apostles to institute the Church. As part of the concluding celebration of Easter, it also harks back to the first Mass of the Easter season — the Easter vigil Mass.

Pentecost, the second most important Feast in the Church's Liturgical Calendar (the first being Easter and third being Christmas), it is fitting that we celebrate with great solemnity this mass of the descend of the Holy Spirit to Earth. This vigil mass contains chants, additional biblical texts, and prayers, which all combine to beautifully forecast a new and great outpouring of God, the Holy Spirit, with the Church’s celebration of Pentecost, the birth of the Church. The liturgical content of the Vigil vividly declares that this is the moment of urgent prayer as the Church watches and waits with Mary and the Apostles for “the Spirit promised by the Lord.”
