Confirmation
Sometimes, what seems to be an obstacle turns out to be an opportunity and a blessing. Our Confirmation was planned for Thursday, May 11th at 4:30pm. During practice the night before, a few of our sponsors were concerned that they would not be able to arrive before the Mass began. Although I tried to reassure them that things would be ok, I had no way of knowing that the Bishop's late arrival would be the reason. Because the Bishop was held up in DC traffic, everyone else was able to arrive before the Mass began. While we were waiting for the Bishop, the youth had time to practice answering the questions the Bishop would most likely ask during his homily. But that was not all...since we started Mass later, everyone was hungry and ate all of the cake so the Ladies of Charity had little to clean up and they had the help of the Knights of Columbus who had started to show up for their bi-weekly meeting at 7:00pm in Grenoble Hall. It was a real joy to see how DC traffic actually took care of our problems and made things easier for us. Perhaps the Spirit had something to do with it?! Praise God!

A big "thank you" to Marti and Arthur for volunteering to be a member of our parish Confirmation team. As the saying goes, "Many hands make light work" so we are looking for more hands, particularly Catholics who have received the sacrament of Confirmation within the last ten years and parents of our young parishioners. Recovering friom a Meniscus Tear
The meniscus is something that many people aren't familiar with, unless they have had a meniscus tear, then your definitely know all about it. It hurts! All of the major joints are complicated with many ligaments and other structures, each having an important function. The knee joint is straightforward. The lateral (outside of the knee joint) and medial (inside of knee joint) meniscus cushion the femur (thigh) bone and tibia (shin bone) so your knee can bend and straighten. Ligaments that surround the knee joint hold the bones together and form a tight, secure joint.
Trauma to the knee joint, especially a twisting movement, will tear the meniscus. Frequently the meniscus will heal with scar tissue. The scar tissue can make your knee feel stiff. Julie Donnelly, LMT, developed an exercise to help stretch the scar tissue enough so that you can bend your knee properly and relieve stiffness pain. You do this exercise only after your meniscus is completely healed.
Stand with your feet directly under your hips. Hold on to a closed door being sure you're on the side of the door that pushes out, so you are pulling it shut as you do the stretch. While keeping your knees straight up from your ankle, squat down, stopping when you start to feel pain in your knee. Stay there, and then go just a little bit further. Don't push, it's better to go slowly so your muscles stretch safely. Scar tissue is really dense, it doesn't stretch easily (if at all) so you need to slowly allow the scar tissue to loosen.
