What is Love? - by Joe Bower
Many of us will forever remember these words in the catchy Haddaway song from the 90’s and A Night at the Roxbury lore.. What has completely changed my life though, has been to ponder those words through the words St. John and Pontius Pilate. The First Letter of John tells us “God is Love” and Pilate asks Jesus during the passion “What is Truth?” - God being all Truth and all Love, and with some liberty in merging scriptures we have “What is Love?”
I would like to spend time this summer reflecting on some of the most influential scriptures, quotes, and Church teachings that have awakened and enlivened Love - Divine Love - in my life.
Firstly, we must look at the Trinity itself. The Trinity is an essence and being of Love. God the Father in his infinite wisdom, power, and glory has to share this Goodness, has to give this to someone - this is the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity. This total deposit and in turn reciprocated Love of the Son between the Father and Son is the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity.
A 20th century Theologian (Deitrich von Hildebrand) said, “We cannot give ourselves love even if we want to. It is not in our power freely to posit such a response of the heart like we can posit a response of the will, nor is it in our power to command love like an action.”
This inability to give ourselves love gives credence to the Trinity itself. I may have all the capacity to love in the world - maybe all the knowledge, or caretaking ability, or cooking abilities - but if I do not have someone to deposit, share, and unite in such loving action, I will always feel incomplete in love.
The Trinity is the model and perfection of this joyous sharing of Love. Mutual, transparent, fully given self to the Other.
Let us take time this week to pray about the love in our life with gratitude, humility, and joy.
